A Dramatic Turn of Events
In an unexpected twist, Liverpool had never lost a European tie after winning the first leg away. However, Ousmane Dembele's early goal leveled the aggregate score at 1-1, turning the momentum in favor of the French side.
PSG executed their penalty kicks flawlessly, converting all four attempts, while Gianluigi Donnarumma made critical saves against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. Luis Enrique had previously remarked that the winner would advance to the final, and now PSG is filled with confidence as they set their sights on a semifinal clash against either Aston Villa or Club Brugge.
Liverpool's Missed Chances and PSG’s Resurgence
Liverpool had the upper hand in the first leg and seemed destined for victory until Alisson Becker's brilliance kept them in the game, enabling Harvey Elliott to secure a late winner. However, the tide turned early in this match, and Liverpool would soon regret not capitalizing on their opportunities.
Alexis Mac Allister nearly set the tone with a chance just four minutes in, finding Mohamed Salah, whose shot was deflected over by Nuno Mendes. Salah squandered another good opportunity shortly after, one of the rare times he managed to outmaneuver Mendes.
PSG took about ten minutes to shake off the pressure from Liverpool before finding their rhythm. The visitors took the lead at 12 minutes when Ibrahima Konate inadvertently turned Bradley Barcola’s cross into his own net, paving the way for a straightforward finish for Dembele.
The French international has now netted 23 goals in his last 17 games and could have added to that tally before the night ended. Konate nearly redeemed himself quickly with a low shot, but Donnarumma was ready to make the save.
PSG created more chances to extend their lead before halftime, with Alisson making two critical saves in one-on-one situations against Barcola and Dembele.
Moreover, PSG managed to secure the signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January, and the Georgian proved to be a constant threat to the Reds' defense, almost scoring when a shot from his cross deflected just over the bar.
PSG’s Shootout Triumph
In the second half, Liverpool came out aggressively, a hallmark of manager Arne Slot’s inaugural season. Dominik Szoboszlai had a goal ruled offside earlier, and moments later, he saw a close-range effort blocked by Willian Pacho, followed by Donnarumma's key save from Diaz after a corner.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s knee injury could have disrupted Liverpool's momentum, but his substitute, Jarell Quansah, nearly clinched the match with a header that struck the inside of the post.
PSG barely threatened during the second half, with Liverpool holding on for penalties in extra time. Lucas Beraldo's header and Desire Doue’s shot both missed the target, but Alisson’s stunning save to turn Dembele's curling effort around the post kept Liverpool's hopes alive.
Despite Alisson's heroics, he couldn’t save Liverpool in the shootout, while Donnarumma emerged as the standout goalkeeper, making crucial saves against Nunez and Jones. PSG's Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele, and Doue all confidently converted their penalties, advancing them to the last eight.
