Early Setbacks for Delhi Capitals
What an exhilarating match it was! Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur delivered a fantastic half-century, while Nat Sciver-Brunt showcased her all-round skills as the leading run-scorer of the tournament, helping the Mumbai Indians reclaim the WPL title. Unfortunately for the Delhi Capitals, this marked their third consecutive loss in the finals.
The Capitals were eager to finally seize the crown that had eluded them for the past two years, but their chase for 150 started disastrously. They lost both Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma within the first three overs. Sciver-Brunt outmaneuvered Lanning with an offcutter that shattered her defense, while Shabnim Ismail trapped Verma LBW using the same tactic.
Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues provided some resistance, managing three boundaries in the sixth over to prevent an abysmal powerplay run rate. However, Amelia Kerr struck immediately, catching Jonassen off guard with a googly, followed by Saika Ishaque stumping Annabel Sutherland. Suddenly, DC was left reeling at 44/4.
Although Rodrigues tried to break the momentum with back-to-back boundaries off Kerr, the New Zealander responded effectively, claiming another wicket and reducing DC to 66/5.
Kapp’s Counterattack Brings DC Back into the Game
At this stage, it felt like another missed opportunity for DC, but Marizanne Kapp rose to the occasion. Having already shined with the ball earlier, she now made her presence felt with the bat.
Kapp launched a six over deep midwicket, followed by a boundary past short fine-leg and consecutive fours off Hayley Matthews. The MI camp grew tense as Kapp continued her charge, smashing 4, 6, 4 against Ishaque, bringing the target down to 35 off 24 balls.
Even as Niki Prasad played a supporting role, her crucial drive eased some of the pressure. With 29 needed off 18 balls, DC needed just one strong over to turn the game in their favor.
Sciver-Brunt Seals the Victory for Mumbai Indians
Just when it seemed like DC was about to turn the match around, Sciver-Brunt delivered a stunning over, dismissing both Kapp and Shikha Pandey in consecutive deliveries, crushing DC’s momentum.
Prasad tried to keep hopes alive with a massive six off Matthews, but Sciver-Brunt’s experience shone through. She bowled a brilliant final over, conceding just five runs when DC needed 14, sealing an 8-run victory for MI and securing their second WPL title in three years.
